Hearing Aid Consultation & Fitting
Choosing a hearing aid is not a shopping trip. It's a partnership. Because Z Audiology is independent, we fit what's right for your ears, your lifestyle, and your budget — not what a manufacturer's quota demands.

Independence is the whole point
The single most consequential decision in hearing-aid care is not which brand you choose — it's whether the person choosing for you has a financial reason to prefer one manufacturer over another. Z Audiology is fully independent. We fit Starkey, Widex, Signia, Oticon, Phonak, and ReSound, and we have no manufacturer quotas, kickbacks, or affiliate obligations. That freedom lets us match the device to your audiogram, ear anatomy, listening priorities, and budget — not to what a corporate parent needs to move this quarter. Chain retailers and buying groups often narrow the catalog to one or two lines; a truly independent audiology practice keeps the full field of options on the table.
Real-ear verification: the step most fittings skip
A hearing aid programmed to a manufacturer's default is not the same as a hearing aid programmed to your ears. Ear canals differ in length, diameter, and resonance; a receiver seated a few millimeters deeper can shift high-frequency output by 6–10 dB. Real-ear measurement — probe-microphone verification against prescriptive targets like NAL-NL2 or DSL v5 — is the objective standard of the field. It is also, according to the American Academy of Audiology's most recent surveys, still performed by only a minority of dispensers nationally. Every hearing aid we fit is verified with real-ear measurement at the initial fit and re-verified whenever we adjust prescription. If you have been fit elsewhere without this step and something feels off, that's often why.
The trial period and what happens after
Florida law protects a 30-day trial on new hearing aids. We extend that to 45–60 days on most fittings because acclimatization is real: your brain needs time to relearn sounds it has been missing, and the honest data comes from wearing the devices in your actual life — the noisy restaurant, the grandchild's soccer game, the phone call with a soft-spoken colleague. Return visits at one week, one month, and three months are built into every fitting we do. Fine-tuning is included as long as you own the devices from us. If the trial doesn't work out, it doesn't work out; you owe us the honest feedback and we handle the return.
Styles, features, and what actually matters
Modern hearing aids fall into a handful of physical styles: receiver-in-canal (RIC) devices with a thin wire and a soft dome or custom tip, behind-the-ear (BTE) devices for more severe losses or pediatric fittings, and custom in-the-ear (ITE, ITC, CIC, IIC) devices milled to a 3D scan of your ear canal. Rechargeable lithium-ion is now standard across every major manufacturer we fit; disposable batteries remain available for patients who prefer them. Where the marketing gets loudest — AI-driven noise reduction, motion sensors, health tracking, hands-free iPhone and Android calling, direct TV streaming, fall detection — the features are real, but they are not what determines success. What determines success is the accuracy of the prescription, the quality of the real-ear verification, and the follow-through of the audiologist you're working with. A basic device fit well outperforms a flagship device fit poorly. We'll walk you through the technology tiers honestly and recommend the level that actually earns its price for your lifestyle rather than the level with the highest margin.
