Tinnitus Management
Tinnitus is exhausting — and it is treatable. The goal isn't always to silence it, but to change your relationship with it, so it stops running the show.
Plan for · By evaluation
What's Included
Everything that happens in the room.
- Comprehensive tinnitus assessment (pitch and loudness matching)
- Minimum masking level and residual inhibition testing
- Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) evaluation
- Sound therapy planning: maskers, notched music, environmental sound
- Hearing-aid fitting with tinnitus programs when hearing loss is present
- Counseling and referral to CBT-trained clinicians when appropriate

What tinnitus actually is
Tinnitus — the perception of sound without an external source — is a symptom, not a disease. It is generated in the auditory pathway, most often as a downstream consequence of hearing loss, though noise exposure, ototoxic medications, head or neck injury, TMJ dysfunction, and vascular changes can all contribute. Estimates put chronic tinnitus prevalence at roughly 15% of American adults; for about one in five of those, it is severe enough to disrupt sleep, concentration, or mood. The ringing, buzzing, hissing, or humming is real. So is the exhaustion of living with it. And the newer neuroscience is clear: with the right combination of sound therapy, counseling, and — where hearing loss exists — well-fit amplification, most patients experience meaningful relief within three to six months.
How we build a plan for you
Tinnitus care starts with measurement. We match the pitch and loudness of your tinnitus using tone comparisons, determine your minimum masking level, and score the disruption with the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory. If you have hearing loss, we address it — because for patients with even mild high-frequency loss, appropriately fit hearing aids relieve tinnitus in a majority of cases by restoring the ambient sound the auditory system is straining to fill. On top of amplification (or alongside it, if hearing is normal), we build a sound-therapy plan: broadband maskers for sleep, notched music for daytime use, environmental sound at work. When the psychological load is significant, we coordinate with clinicians trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for tinnitus — the modality with the strongest evidence base for reducing distress.
What we won't promise
There is currently no FDA-approved medication for tinnitus and no reliable cure for the most common forms. Any provider or product promising a permanent silence is overselling. What we can promise is a structured program grounded in the evidence, honest communication about what is likely and what is not, and follow-through at 30, 60, and 90 days to track how your relationship with the sound is changing over time.
Lifestyle, sleep, and the loop we help you break
Tinnitus and stress feed each other in a tight loop: the sound intrudes, the nervous system responds, cortisol rises, sleep suffers, and the next day the sound feels louder because your baseline resilience is lower. Breaking that loop is often as important as any device we fit. We'll talk through caffeine timing, alcohol, nicotine, and the medications known to worsen tinnitus for some patients (aspirin at high doses, certain antibiotics, loop diuretics, some chemotherapies) so you can have an informed conversation with your prescribing physician. We coach a bedtime sound plan that uses steady low-level background sound to lower the contrast between your tinnitus and the room. For patients whose tinnitus has a somatic component — meaning it changes when they clench the jaw, tilt the head, or press on the neck — we coordinate with dentists trained in TMJ care and with physical therapists who work on cervical spine mobility. None of this is a cure. All of it is measurable progress, and progress is what most patients came in wanting when they said they wanted the ringing to stop.
How It Goes
The process, step by step.
01
Full audiological workup
Because tinnitus and hearing loss travel together, we start with a complete evaluation.
02
Tinnitus assessment
We match the pitch and loudness of your tinnitus and score its impact on your daily life.
03
Individual plan
Sound therapy, hearing aids with masking features, and evidence-based coping strategies — chosen for your specific pattern.
04
Follow-up
Tinnitus care is a program, not an event. We check in at 30, 60, and 90 days.
Who It's For
You might book this if…
- Patients whose tinnitus disrupts sleep or concentration
- Sudden or unilateral tinnitus (we'll also refer to ENT)
- Musicians and veterans with noise-induced tinnitus
- Hearing-aid users whose devices aren't helping their tinnitus
Common Questions
FAQs.
- Can tinnitus be cured?
- Sometimes — when there's a treatable underlying cause. More often, we help you manage it so effectively that it fades into the background.
- Are hearing aids the answer?
- For patients with hearing loss, well-fit hearing aids relieve tinnitus in the majority of cases. We verify with real-ear measurement.
- Is there medication?
- No FDA-approved medication currently exists for tinnitus. Sound therapy and counseling remain the most evidence-based approaches.
