Custom Hearing Protection

The hearing you have is worth protecting. Off-the-shelf foam plugs muffle everything; custom protection attenuates evenly, so speech and music still come through — cleaner, just quieter.

Why custom protection beats foam

Foam earplugs work by muffling everything — they roll off the high frequencies aggressively, which protects your ears but also flattens speech and music into a dull rumble. Custom-molded protection with acoustic filters does something different: it attenuates evenly across the frequency spectrum, so speech is quieter but still intelligible, music is quieter but still musical, and you retain the situational awareness you need on stage, at the range, or in a workshop. Musicians ER-9, ER-15, and ER-25 filters, for example, deliver flat attenuation at 9, 15, or 25 dB respectively — the same tonal balance, just softer. Custom fit also improves seal, which improves real-world protection over the theoretical rating of a foam plug worn improperly.

Who benefits, and why prevention pays

Noise-induced hearing loss is cumulative and permanent. There is no medication or surgical repair for the hair-cell damage caused by unprotected exposure to loud sound; the only treatment is prevention. That's why we fit custom protection for working musicians and DJs, hobbyist and professional shooters, hunters, industrial workers under OSHA-mandated hearing conservation programs, aviation and motorsports enthusiasts, and — increasingly — anyone with an active exposure profile who wants to protect the hearing they still have. Beyond noise, we make swim molds for adults and children with recurrent ear infections or PE tubes, custom sleep plugs for shift workers and light sleepers, and in-ear monitors for stage and studio use.

The process, start to finish

Custom protection starts with a consultation about when and where you need it, followed by silicone ear impressions taken in-office in a single visit. The impressions ship to the lab, where devices are manufactured over two to three weeks. At delivery, we verify fit, comfort, and seal, and adjust anything that isn't quite right. With reasonable care — a wipe-down after use, occasional cleaning with the tool we send home with you — most custom plugs last three to five years. Filters can be replaced independently as they age or as your exposure profile changes. FSA and HSA accounts typically cover custom hearing protection because prevention costs a small fraction of what treating hearing loss costs later.

Understanding attenuation ratings honestly

Every piece of hearing protection carries a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) printed on the packaging — 22, 25, 33 dB. Those numbers are laboratory ceilings, not real-world performance. OSHA's own guidance derates the NRR by 50% for practical use because most workers don't achieve a laboratory-grade fit in the field. What matters more than the sticker is whether the protection you're wearing seals evenly and stays sealed for the duration of exposure. A custom-molded plug with a 15 dB filter, worn correctly for a full shift, will out-protect a 33 dB foam plug that loosens after twenty minutes. For patients working under a formal hearing conservation program, we can fit-test custom plugs to a personalized attenuation rating and document the result for your employer's records. For hunters and shooters, we discuss electronic protection that combines passive attenuation with amplification of low-level sounds so situational awareness is preserved between shots. Choosing the right device is a conversation about exposure profile, communication needs, and comfort — the correct answer is different for a machinist, a symphony violinist, and a competitive skeet shooter, and we'll get to yours specifically.

How It Goes

The process, step by step.

Manufacturing

Impressions are sent to the lab; devices arrive in 2–3 weeks.

04

Fit check

We verify fit, comfort, and seal on delivery — and adjust if anything's off.

Who It's For

You might book this if…

  • Working and hobbyist musicians
  • Hunters, shooters, and range instructors
  • Swimmers with recurring ear infections or tubes
  • Shift workers, light sleepers, snoring partners
  • Construction, aviation, and industrial workers

Common Questions

FAQs.

How much attenuation do I need?
It depends on your exposure. We'll help you choose — most musicians land at ER-15; industrial and shooters usually need ER-25 or higher.
How long do custom plugs last?
With reasonable care, 3–5 years. Filters can be replaced independently.
Can I use my FSA or HSA?
Yes — FSA/HSA cards are typically accepted for custom hearing protection. Prevention costs far less than treatment.
